First off, it is playing in Full Screen. Those black bars are there because you created a PP show that is square (4:3 aspect ratio is SQUARE or Full Screen) and you are playing it on a rectangular screen( 16:9 is RECTANGULAR or Wide Screen).
It's either keep the original show intact (square) and put black bars on the sides to fill up the space, or stretch it out and distort the image to play it widescreen (rectangular).
So either keep your presentation intact and display it Full Screen with black bars so you don't get distorted text/images, change your Display Settings (on the video card – nothing to do with PP) and get rid of "maintain aspect ratio" which will stretch and distort, or change the page layout of your PP show.
If you change your page layout (File -> Page setup…) then use 8" X 4.5".
It's not an "annoyance with powerpoint" it a simple fact that you are placing a square image on a rectangular screen. What is so hard for people to understand about this?

If you have it hooked up properly and the monitor is connected to your sound card, you use the volume control, usually found near the clock. Or if you have a multimedia keyboard, make sure you haven't muted it and use the keys to turn the volume up or down.

I am not sure exactly how big yours are but if they are under 2 or 3" they are probably not sexually mature yet so the fish is probably not pregnant or holding eggs, it might have a health issue.
Goldfish usually dont become sexually mature until they are about a year old. Usually they are about 3-4" by now if they have a proper habitat.
I have read spring is when they tend to breed and that's when the white tubercles (NOT ick) appear on the males. There will be white spots on their gills and the rim of their fins in the front (not their tales)……Females tend to get plump during this time but usually do not develop the tubercles (if any, there are very few).
I have a black moor that is about 4" long and right now you can see all his tubercles, and he is obsesed with chasing around my red fantail who is only about 2" long. The 2" one is obviously not mature and I can not tell if it is male/female but I would guess female from my larger fish's obessesion with following it around and bumping it. The black moor ignores the other black moor in the tank, so who knows if it's male/female. It's also only about 2".
All in all, sexing is really hard to do before a year old and if any tiem,spring is a good time to tell. I would maybe try to treat the water or ask someone if they know what could be up.

A rectangular shape is better because it more represents a persons field of vision rather than square.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like it's time for a new monitor.
There is a chance that it is something simple like the VGA cable that you use to connect it to the PC being bad, but for being that old, It is not unlikely that the monitor is just dying.
