I would have gave it five stars but read why I didn’t below.
Great color, nice and bright display, well made. I traded in my dual 19″ monitor set-up and I am very happy.
Pros:
built-in speakers (when you don’t need to listen to music at a loud volume)
true high definition
hdmi port
stand allows you to place your keyboard on it to clear up desk space
power button and power indicator on top so it doesn’t annoy you
swivels and pivots
Cons:
only has vga and hdmi ports, no dvi
only came with the vga cord, no hdmi (Acer comes with all three)
lousy one-year warranty
I like it. The only comparable in size and cost is the Acer Computer X233H BD 23″ Widescreen LCD Monitor. It’s got a three-year warranty and vga, hdmi, and a dvi ports. Also comes with all three cables.
I have not compared the two next to each other. If the graphics look as good on the Acer, I’m going to return this HP and get the Acer since it has more ports for better adaptability, more cords so you don’t have to spend any money, and a three-year warranty for peace of mind. Also, the Acer has 40000 to 1 contrast ratio vs the HP’s 30000 to 1 contrast ratio.
I will update when I get to review the Acer.
Updated on May 11th, 2009:
Well I checked out the Acer X233H and though it is more flexible and have more bang for the buck, this is definitely a nicer monitor performance wise. First of all, the Acer has a flat picture. Less glare but the picture and graphics of the HP really come out at you. They are sharper and crisper than the Acer.
I really like the location of the power button on the HP because it is on top and not in front starting at you as a distraction if you are using the monitor at little to low light. I have a very nice back-lit Logitech keyboard and when I type in little to no light, there is no glaring power indicator in front of me.
I also think that the stand of the Acer is really weak and though it looks good, is not multi-functional like the HP, where you can store the keyboard, freeing up your desk when you need to use your desk.
With that said, I am keeping my HP and not getting the Acer.
I’ve had the monitor for a day and it’s excellent. It’s connected to my aluminum MacBook and after a one-time setup (see below) the picture is sharp and clear and the colors are true to my eyes. It was fun watching a video at [...] with it. I bought it for its size and the 23 inch display is perfect for me. I can fit a couple of windows side by side so it’s reduced the need to juggle windows. The picture controls are easily accessible and intuitive to use (unlike my old 19-inch Samsung that the HP is replacing). I’m not using the internal speakers because I have a desktop sound system that takes little space. So far I have nothing negative to say but if something comes up I’ll update my review.
I considered getting the Apple 24-inch display. But at almost $900 vs. ~$250 for the 23-inch HP there was no contest. I’ve seen the Apple in the Apple store and it looks great. But so does the HP. I suppose if you put them side by side there could be visible differences. But I’ll probably never see them side by side. I am also not a graphics artist who may have more exacting needs and a different opinion. The Apple has some nice features such as USB ports, a cable (more about that later) and a built in video camera which I don’t need. Cables and USB ports cost me ~$60 so I’m still way ahead financially. A great value in comparison.
I’m a recent PC-to-MAC switcher so there were some things that I had to learn about which I went through with my old monitor. I’ll mention them here in case they are useful for a new MacBook switcher like me who is adding their first external monitor.
1. Two cable devices are needed. One is Apple’s mini display port to DVI adapter. Cost ~$30. Then you need a DVI to HDMI cable to go from the Apple adapter to the HDMI monitor input. Cost ~$10 to $15 on Amazon from any number of vendors.
2. The MacBook has to be powered for the external display to work. The MacBook will not feed a signal to the external display when running on battery.
3. (There may be a better way to do this than I am aware of.) With the monitor plugged in and on and the MacBook display on, select displays from System Preferences. There should be an Arrangement item near the top of the preference window. If Mirror Displays is checked uncheck it. Follow the instructions on the screen to arrange the two displays so they are side by side. Then click the Display option. At this point there should be two display option preference windows on the screen, one for each display. Fiddle around with them until you have a sense of what’s going on. Then set the Resolution for the HP to 1920 x 1080. If you have been panicking up to now because your resolution was terrible, you will be amazed as the resolution snaps in.
4. At this point you can close the MacBook and just have the single HP display operating. When I do this the MacBook goes to sleep and the screen goes black. But pressing any key quickly wakes it up.
5. Still in Display preferences click the Color option. When I did that the Display Profile for the HP was magically there (HP w2338h). I don’t know how it got there because the computer is six months old and I think the monitor is very recent. Maybe it gets it from the monitor or does an automatic download from the Internet. In any event, I didn’t question magic. I selected the profile and I was done.
The setup is a one time thing. Now every time I reconnect the monitor to the MacBook the video comes up with the settings.
I recently replaced a Samsung 19″ flat screen with this monitor, and it is fantastic. No dead pixels, it is bright, has good contrast, and is all-around very sharp. I like the widescreen format too. I would have given it 5 stars, except for that the screen is so glossy that if I’m, say, watching a movie, and it cuts to a dark scene, I suddenly see myself reflected in it. Right now I can see myself reflected in the dark wallpaper I have on the desktop. I’d say the reflectivity is similar to that of the underside of a DVD. Also, keep in mind that this monitor does not have a DVI input, so if you get it and only have DVI, be sure to get a DVI to HDMI adapter in your order. It’ll save you a last-minute trip to Fry’s.
you got alot of money dont ya?

Yeah, i think OLED is thin film, whereas “normal” LEDs are conventional monolithic. But pixels can die on LCDs as well, of course. And yes, video projectors are another great display method.

When they say its an HDTV monitor, it means it comes with a built in TV tuner to plug in with your receiver and watch tv. Therefore you can effectively use it as a computer screen AND a TV. The ones with built in TV tuners are usually more expensive (50-100 dollars more) but offer no additional benefit in terms of picture quality compared to the same monitor with no tv tuner.
Any new LCD is an "HD" monitor. "HD quality" is sort of a vague term and really depends on resolution. You can have a monitor that reaches 1920×1080 resolution (most of them do) and thats exactly what resolutions most HD TVs reach (hence the terms 720p or 1080p).

I want speakers for my laptop, but I'm afraid that having a 17' laptop, a rather large second monitor and printer combo means no desk space.

You have to set the resulting action for closing the lid to Shut down, Hibernate, or Stand by. I recommend Hibernate.
You are seeing this issue, because your are hitting the automatic feature built into the laptop that if there is no power related action assigned to the lid switch, it assumes you are closing the laptop to use the laptop with an external monitor. Now, I'm sure that you are on occasion closing the laptop to use it to play music… if there is no external monitor. Your model laptop might have a BIOS setting to modify this behavior (my Toshiba does not) as well, but at this point, you should probably make a choice as to what power related action you want your laptop to follow.
You would make this choice in the Advanced Tab of the Power options from the control panel of XP.
You can take the advanced step of disabling the secondary display controller… again depending on your model of laptop. Some laptops will install two display adapters (one for the screen, one for the external) in the Device manager (again, my Toshiba doesn't, but I've reinstalled Windows on enough systems that do). Identifying which is the external and disabling it should keep it from being activated.
But, I'd still go with the Hibernate feature… then maybe set your display to turn off after 15 minutes of not being used, so you just have to almost close your lid when you want to listen to tunes without the display on.
You're limited in what you can do if your friend simply has a better quality LCD, but there are some changes you can make to improve things.
High colour temperatures result in 'warmer' pictures while lower ones result in 'cooler' pictures. Cooler is the best because white looks slightly more red when warmer.
You need to get a test-pattern on your screen so you can calibrate the settings. I've linked to a web page full of test-patterns at the bottom of this answer. While displaying a shaded white/black pattern, set your brightness and contrast to 100. Decrease the brightness until you can just make out the difference between pure black and the next shade up. Next, display an image of some sort (preferably something like a high resolution photo or HD content) and alter the sharpness level to your liking.
If the picture still looks washed, you'll have to artificially alter the colour levels if you can either through your TV or XBOX/PC. Nvidia offers a nice feature that improves colour luminance in their Nvidia Control Panel.
