Is your monitor widescreen? Perhaps you set up the video player on your PC to stretch the video.
So, check all settings: Camera, video card, video player, and make sure they are all widescreen – or at minimum, check the aspect format of your video player.

and i think that settings if your computer has been changed, increase the brightness within your windows
go to control panel then windows mobility center and now increase the brightness
i use vista so this feature works in that one, if you use another OS this thing may not work with you.

Check and see if it is the video file itself or if it's the video player. Open with windows media player to play then right click and select properties to get the aspect ratio and frame size.
Are your videos being captured from your tape based camera with video capture software? If so than the profile being used doesn't have the right aspect ratio selected. I have a miniDV camera and use StashSpace.Com to capture video onto my computer. They let you choose 16:9 or 4:3. Go to to get the software.
